Unusual Soccer Match Cancellations

This is a list of soccer matches that have been cancelled over the past few years due to unusual circumstances. There have been a wide range of reasons for cancellation including government intervention, war and terrorism, deadly disease outbreaks, wild boars, burning toilet paper, David Beckham issues, and more. For this list, I chose to avoid weather issues, player deaths, hooligans, riots and other similar issues. Feel free to add any memorable match cancellations in the comments.

  1. The English League Division 2 game between Sheffield United & Oldham Athletic at Bramall Lane on 09/02/85 was postponed due to an unexploded WW2 bomb that was found, during excavations, on a street adjacent to the ground.

It was instead played the following Tuesday 12/02/85.

  2. Thanks for that info, that's really interesting. I only had a chance to look briefly, but I wasn't able to find a link to this story. Any chance you know of one so I can add it to the list?

I did find this similar story of a postponed Serie B game due to a WWII bomb: Link
