2018-2022 World Cup Bid Commercials

Apparently if you want to host the World Cup you have to make a snazzy, well-produced video telling everyone how great you are. Here's a few of the promos put out by the nations bidding for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.

For some reason, I couldn't find a bid commercial from Japan

Homegrown Top Goal Scorers (2008/2009)

In recent years, it has become common for foreign players to lead world leagues in goal scoring, especially in the big leagues of Europe. For instance, last season the four 'big' UEFA leagues were all led by foreign born goal scorers (England; Anelka - Italy; Ibrahimovic - Germany; Grafite - Spain; Forlan).

The fact that the likes of Wayne Rooney, Stefan Kießling, Antonio Di Natale, and David Villa could all potentially lead their home nations in goal scoring this season is a minor miracle based on recent seasons.

I went to Soccerway.com to find out how many world leagues were led by homegrown goal scorers during the last completed season (2008/2009 or 2009 for summer leagues). Not every league listed at soccerway had goal scoring statistics available but this is a fairly comprehensive list. If a nation is not listed, it either had a foreign-born goal leader or the statistics were not available.

I also decided to list if a player has transferred since leading their league in goals. I was interested to know if leading a 'smaller' league in scoring led to moving abroad or to bigger clubs in the same league.

Journeymen: Romário

Romário. The man who scored 1000 career goals (debatable) had a very well traveled career. It basically went like this: Brazil-Europe-back to Brazil-Europe-back to Brazil-Europe-Back to Brazil etc.. with a few Qatar, USA, and Australian appearances thrown in near the end.

Amazingly, Romário played for Vasco da Gama four different times and for Flamengo three different times. All in all, he had 9 separate stints with Rio-based Brazilian clubs including Fluminense and one 'came out of retirement' appearance for America last year.

ACL Highlights: Australian A-League Teams

Here are the highlights from the recent Asian Champions League games involving Australian teams. Beijing Gouan (China) took on the Melbourne Victory on Tuesday and Pohang Steelers (Korea Republic) faced Adelaide United on Wednesday.

Interestingly, Beijing Guoan based Australian, Joel Griffiths, (wiki) knocked in the deciding goal against his countrymen and the A-League's Melbourne Victory.

Adelaide United, who finished bottom of the A-League this season, pulled off a bit of a shocker by defeating one of this seasons ACL favorites, Pohang Steelers. 19 year old Mathew Leckie (wiki), is the man responsible with a determined 1 on 4 break from the halfway line turning out just the way he planned it....

For some reason, whenever I see a predominantly red and yellow soccer shirt, I instantly think of the Windows 95 theme 'Hot Dog Stand' Probably an obscure nerd reference for most people, but what can I say (am I getting old?). Or maybe it's places like this.
