Video: Asian Champions League Overhead Goal

Unfortunately, the Asian club team I support (Japan's Nagoya Grampus) crashed out in the semi-finals of the Asian Champions League against Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia this morning (they didn't stand a chance anyways after losing the first leg 6-2 a few days ago). Nagoya striker, Keita Sugimoto, did pull off this excellent overhead goal for the home fans though. Congrats to Al-Ittihad, good luck in the final. As for Nagoya, maybe next year...

Videos: Best J-League Goals of 2008 and 2009

I've mentioned before that I'm a big fan of the J-League in Japan. The crowd support is great and the attacking "Brazilian/Japanese" style of play is fun to watch. Having attended a couple of Japanese league games in person, I can say that the atmosphere is outstanding as well. These videos show some truly world class goals and attacking play (and some poor defending and goalkeeping errors, but these are goal highlights after all).

Here are the goals of the season from 2008 and the best goals so far in the 2009 season from Youtube channel/user Siohoko.

Brazil and Japan J-League Link

These are all the transfers between the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (Brazil) and the J-League (Japan) that have taken place between the leagues in the last year or so. Lately there have been many players returning to Brazil after a stint in Japan (with former Tokyo Verdy and Urawa Reds player Washington playing a major role in Fluminense's Copa Libertadores runner-up finish last season).

World Soccer League Schedule Chart

A chart showing the times of the year that various world soccer leagues take place.

I'm glad MLS takes place through the summer, although from reading message forums many MLS fans seem to disagree. It allows for a year round club soccer fix, and in the US it doesn't compete with as many sports as it would in the Fall and Winter. I just wish they'd take a couple of weeks off during the big international tournaments in mid-summer.

I had to throw in the old school video game reference when I saw what the chart looked like. What was the name of that game again?

J-League 2008

I had the pleasure of visiting Japan a few years back and when I was there I managed to talk my wife into riding a subway for an hour to attend a J-League match between Nagoya Grampus Eight and FC Tokyo in Nagoya.

Once we finally figured out where the stadium was and deciphered the Japanese only tickets to find our seats, we settled in to enjoy the game. The match had a fantastic atmosphere and entertaining style of play and I've done my best to follow the league ever since then. (Nagoya won 1-0 in case you were wondering)

The 2008 J-League season just started a couple of weeks ago and I thought I'd list a few of the sites I use to keep track of the league here:
