  1. As an Estonian I'd say Joel Lindpere of Chicago Fire is pronounced differently.

Joel - the Jo-part of the name sounds like the start of York and el-part sounds just like you say the letter L in English.

    Lindpere is Lind-pair-eh

  2. Thanks for the comment Chuksi. Nice to see what the Estonian pronunciation should be. I don't know if I've ever heard an MLS commentator say "YO-EL", it's always "JO-el". Maybe he decided to "Americanize" it when he came to MLS. Interesting.

Note: I put this list together from the official game and media guides and "jol lind-pair" is the pronunciation listed in the Chicago Fire media guide. I'm not really sure where MLS comes up with these pronunciations as a handful of them are written differently than how I've heard them pronounced before.

  3. As an Estonian its tough to watch MLS and therefore I can't comment on how they do it there. Saying the first name is probably something he himself uses like that in America as well as its much easier for him and everyone else if he doesn't correct them all the time.

But I'm a bit surprised that they haven't got the family name right. Although its obviously not a big difference.

I guess the pronounciations aren't EXACTLY right for a few others. Although I'm not a linguist and wouldn't be able to say for sure, but usually the names are twisted a bit in English. Although I guess thats the case in any language as sometimes its tough to listen to TV commentary on Estonian TV as well.

For example during 2002(I think) World Cup the commentators decided that the last o of Brazilians names should be pronounced uh. So we had Ronalduh, Rivalduh etc. Was quite annoying :).
