MLS: Biggest Pay Raises and Pay Cuts from 2008 to 2009

These are Major League Soccer's top pay raises (min $35,000) and all of the pay cuts that have taken place from the 2008 season to the 2009 season. I used the 9/7/08 and 3/2/09 "guaranteed compensation" salary information from the MLS Player Union website.

Surprises? RSL standout Javier Morales took a $40,000 paycut while Khano Smith and Ugo Ihemelu received $70,000 pay raises from last season. Kenny Cooper got a $25,000 raise, but as a top striker, his salary of $108,000 still seams very low compared to other forwards, including his teammate, Jeff Cunningham, who will be paid $267K in 2009. Heck, even Toronto's Chad Barrett received a $140K pay raise and is set to make over $200K this season.

It's good to see that pretty much all of last seasons Lowest Paid/Top Performers got a decent salary bump for this season, especially Colorado's Nick LaBrocca (+$59K) and Omar Cummings (+$40K).

It's been mentioned elsewhere many times, but, Kansas City pulled off a great move by signing now-non-DP Claudio Lopez for $640K less than last season.

Bobby Boswell is finally getting paid. What was he making the last couple of seasons as a top defender in the league? $33,000. He got a bump to $150K. Nice one Monsieur Boswell.
